The best memes about Donald Trump and Elon Musk breaking up

In the least surprising turn of events ever, Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s tumultuous romance has come to a bitter end.

Really, the pair have only ever been frenemies at best: Musk was a Democrat voter until 2020, and they have feuded before on multiple occasions (Trump once claimed he could make Musk “drop to his knees and beg” him, adding the note of homoeroticism necessary for any truly passionate male friendship.)  From around the beginning of Trump’s last election campaign until now, they have been able to put aside their differences and unite over their shared passions for gutting social services, persecuting minority groups and pretending there’s a “white genocide” taking place in South Africa.

But an alliance between two of the world’s most narcissistic and abrasive people was always going to be combustible. In fact, what’s really surprising about the collapse of their friendship is how boring it’s been – the inciting incident was a tax spending bill, which is hardly Zayn leaving One Direction or Maddie finding out that Cassie fucked Nate Jacobs. Musk, for his part, has been pulling out all the stops, taking credit for Trump’s election victory and dropping the supposedly bombshell allegation that Trump is mentioned in unreleased Epstein files (Trump and Epstein’s connection is a matter of long-standing public record so, if true, this would hardly be surprising.) But Trump’s response has been far too sober and dignified for our liking.

Say what you like about Trump, but he is a generational talent when it comes to insulting people – he has it in him to shatter Musk’s ego beyond repair. But instead of going in for the kill, he has expressed his “disappointment”.  He has also threatened to cancel the federal government subsidies and contracts on which Musk’s wealth has always relied, which would be funny, but until he comes out with some devastatingly catty remarks about Musk’s grotesque appearance and off-putting mannerisms, we’re chalking this up as a weak performance from Trump – do better, Mr President. Toss your hair in a bun, throw on some Lemonade-era Beyoncé, and deport this clown.

It’s fun to see two more or less equally terrible people fighting (Trump is just as evil but less annoying, which is why I am firmly #TeamTrump) and the breakup has inspired a flurry of memes – here’s some of the best.
