Having both been obsessed with folklore stories when they were children, the photographer and Euphoria actor created the concept and text for their new project collaboratively. Fairy Tales features nine characters, each shot by Collins and portrayed by Demie, and will blend new stories with traditional fairytales. The book will incorporate all your favourite mythical creatures – elves, mermaids, sirens, water sprites, fairies, witches, and banshees – and will be set everywhere from suburban homes and parking lots to weird and wondrous worlds. According to publisher Rizzoli, Collins’ photography will “combine elements of camp, prosthetics, and shibari”, offering a “surreal update” to the imagery of revered folk writers, including Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen, Charles Perrault, and more. This isn’t the first time Collins and Demie have collaborated – the photographer shot Demie back in September, in imagery that featured the actor in shibari. Look back at Demie’s 2019 interview with Dazed Beauty here, and see Collins reflect on Tumblr feminism as part of Dazed’s End of the Decade campaign here. Fairytales by Petra Collins and Alexa Demie will be published via Rizzoli on October 5. You can pre-order your copy here.
