The internet meme to Hollywood franchise pipeline is well and truly flowing. This week, it was reported that A24 is set to sign on a big-name cast for its feature-length adaptation of the legendary Backrooms creepypasta, but in even bigger news: Michael Bay’s Skibidi Toilet movie is finally underway.

The 60-year-old Transformers director Michael Bay is making a Skibidi Toilet movie, you ask? Why yes! The father of films about things blowing up signed on to direct a take on the TikTok phenomenon back in 2024, promising a “creative take” on the short-form video series, which sees toilets with talking heads try to take over the world.

“He’s building something that could be the next Transformers or could be a Marvel universe,” said studio big shot and Bay collaborator Adam Goodman at the time of the announcement. And now it seems we’re one step closer to that dream. On Tuesday (May 20) Invisible Narratives – the company headed up by Bay and Goodman – put out a press release, saying that Skibidi Toilet is already in production.

As for what we can actually expect from its “creative take” on the viral machinima series, the statement adds that the filmmaker has brought his “signature visual intensity” to the project and remains committed to “redefining the modern blockbuster”.

Casting details are yet to be revealed, so we’re left to speculate about who could play the titular toilets or their TV-headed arch-enemies. Could Charli xcx continue her foray into film as the leader of the Skibidi Toilets, G-Toilet? Could Harris Dickinson take some time off directing acclaimed dramas to step into the role of the porcelain protagonist? Maybe Pamela Anderson could even put in a tender performance as a wise older toilet, tasked with navigating the changing world of anthropomorphic plumbing.

It’s also unclear how much influence original creator Alexey Gerasimov (who sparked the meme in 2023) will have on the production. What we do know is that TV rights for Skibidi Toilet are also primed in case of the film’s success, potentially paving the way for a whole Skibidi Cinematic Universe in years to come. What a time to be alive.
