Next up is a preview screening and Q&A of Andrea Arnold’s tender coming-of-age tale, Bird. Starring Saltburn’s Barry Keoghan alongside the sensational newcomer Nykiya Adams, Arnold’s return to fiction filmmaking follows 12-year-old Bailey (Adams) as she navigates adolescence with a loving but chaotic single dad (Keoghan) and rebellious brother, Hunter (Jason Buda), in a squat in Gravesend, north Kent. Adventures ensue when Bailey encounters a mysterious stranger, Bird, played by Passages star Franz Rogowski (who also covers the new edition of Another Man). As their individual journeys intersect, Bailey's transition from childhood to adulthood is sketched out in Arnold’s poetic, empathetic, and social realist style. After the film, stick around for a Q&A hosted by Letterboxd editor Ella Kemp with Nykiya Adams, Jason Buda, and cinematographer and Arnold’s long-time collaborator, Robbie Ryan. Bird premiered to critical acclaim at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, and continues the trend of depicting unforgettable heroines in Arnold’s work, from 2016’s American Honey, to 2009’s Fish Tank (which is featured in MUBI’s Not Just A Girl season, if you want to give it a rewatch). The Dazed x MUBI Cinema Club screening of Bird will take place on November 6 at Dalston’s Rio Cinema. Doors open at 5:45pm for a 6:30pm film start.
