There’s been much debate about who’s the real villain of The Devil Wears Prada over the years, and we might finally be one step closer to getting a real, canon answer. Yesterday (July 8) it was announced that nightmarish editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly is set to return in an upcoming sequel to the 2006 film.

The original film’s screenwriter, Aline Brosh McKenna, is reportedly in talks to write the new film for Disney, according to Variety. All we know about the story so far is that it will follow Priestly as her career takes a turn for the worse amid the decline of traditional magazine publishing. (Apparently publishing is on the decline! Who knew?) Priestly will also be up against Emily Blunt’s character from the original, who has become a “high-powered executive” at a luxury group whose ad money she desperately needs.

Despite the returning characters, it’s unclear who will be returning from the original cast. In case you’ve somehow overlooked The Devil Wears Prada for the last 18 years, that includes Meryl Streep as Priestly, the head of Runway magazine, Anne Hathaway as her much-humiliated junior personal assistant, Andy, and Emily Blunt as Priestly’s senior assistant, Emily.

The first film was based on Lauren Weisberger’s bestselling novel of the same name from 2003. This drew on Weisberger’s own experiences as a PA for Vogue editor Anna Wintour, which provided the blueprint for the near-psychopathic behaviour of the fashion industry.

All of the main cast members have maintained a pretty good relationship with the film in the years since it first hit cinema screens. Streep, Blunt, and Hathaway came together for an onstage reunion at this year’s SAG Awards, alongside other joint appearances. A long-awaited stage musical version of the film, with music by Elton John, also just opened in the UK.

Obviously, there’s no release date for the sequel yet either – by all means, Disney, move at a glacial pace. In the meantime, you can revisit the trailer for the original Devil Wears Prada below.
