The highly anticipated sequel, which comes three decades after the first film’s release, sees Michael Keaton reprise his iconic role as the title character, alongside Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara as Lydia and Delia Deetz respectively. Jenna Ortega is joining the cast as Lydia’s daughter Astrid, while Justin Theroux is set to play a character named Rory, although specifics about his character are as yet unknown. According to EW, the sequel picks up decades after the events of the original film, shortly after a death in the family. “That’s all I will say,” Burton said. “There's something that happens that sets things in motion.” Burton added he wasn’t planning on doing a sequel “unless it felt right” and eventually decided that it would be most interesting to focus on the three generations of Deetz women. “I so identified with the Lydia character, but then you get to all these years later, and you take your own journey, going from cool teenager to lame adult, back and forth again,” the director said. “That made it emotional, gave it a foundation. So that was the thing that really truly got me into it.” Beetlejuice Beetlejuice also stars Monica Bellucci, Willem Dafoe and Arthur Conti. We don’t know much about what their roles will entail just yet, although Dafoe shed some light on his character in an interview with Variety in November 2023. “I play a police officer in the afterlife, so I’m a dead person. And in life I was a B-movie action star, but I had an accident and that’s what sent me to the other side,” he said. While Beetlejuice Beetlejuice had its production interrupted by the actors’ strike in July 2023, filming wrapped in late November 2023. The film will be released in cinemas on September 6.
