It’s been 18 months since we saw Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides link up with Zendaya (AKA Chani) and join the Fremen in a bid to bring peace to the desert planet of Arrakis at the end of Dune. Now, though, we finally have a first look at the follow-up, Dune: Part Two, courtesy of the first official trailer.
The preview teases numerous big plot points from the second instalment of the Denis Villeneuve-directed sci-fi epic – think: prophecies about the fall of House Atreides, spice-soaked visions, and Timmy’s first ride on a monstrous sandworm. “In the first movie, Paul Atreides is a student,” as Chalamet told audiences at CinemaCon last week. In Dune: Part Two, on the other hand: “We really see Paul Atreides become a leader.”
The new trailer also features appearances from cast newcomers Florence Pugh, Austin Butler, and Léa Seydoux (who are joined by Christopher Walken as Padishah Emperor Shaddam Corrino IV), alongside a healthy dose of previous stars including Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista, and Javier Bardem.
Make no mistake, though: things are going to be different this time around. More specifically, we’re going to be spending a lot more time in the desert with Chani, as endlessly assured by the cast and crew since the premiere of Dune in 2021. In the sequel, which picks up halfway through Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel of the same name, Paul Atreides teams up with Chani and the Fremen to exact revenge on the people who murdered his family and direct the fate of the universe (all while juggling his budding love life and a mystical spice habit that’s turning his eyes blue).
Whether Dune: Part Two will be the end of Paul’s quest on the big screen remains to be seen, since Villeneuve himself has previously hinted at plans for a third film based on Herbert’s second Dune book, Dune Messiah.
