Watch the gruesome trailer for David Cronenberg’s Crimes of the Future

The cult director returns with his first film in eight years

Canadian film director David Cronenberg has released two teaser trailers for his forthcoming film, Crimes of the Future. Cronenberg first rose to prominence through 1980s body horror films like Scanners, Videodrome and The Fly before moving on to different genres, from historical biopic to crime drama. But this new film looks set to be a return to the kind of twisted sci-fi that made his name. His first release since Maps to the Stars in 2014, it’s due to premiere at Cannes this May as part of the film festival’s official programme.

The trailers don’t give much away about the story, but according to the film’s official synopsis, Viggo Mortensen plays “a celebrity performance artist” who “publicly showcases the metamorphosis of his organs in avant-garde performances.” The film also stars Léa Seydoux, who plays his partner, while Kristen Stewart plays an investigator from the National Organ Registry who makes a disturbing discovery. It will be released in June.
