Last month, we got a glimpse of Kristen Stewart’s Princess Diana in the first teaser trailer for Pablo Larraín’s Spencer. Now, Neon has shared the first full trailer for the upcoming biopic, diving deeper into Stewart’s portrayal of the people’s princess (and, of course, her carefully-cultivated accent).
In case you’re not caught up, Spencer revolves around a long weekend spent at the Queen’s Sandringham Estate over the 1991 Christmas holidays, which coincides with the breakdown of Diana’s marriage to Prince Charles. Though it’s not 100 per cent true to real life, the film is billed as “an imagining of what might have happened during those few fateful days”.
“The marriage of Princess Diana and Prince Charles has long since grown cold,” adds an official synopsis. “Though rumours of affairs and a divorce abound, peace is ordained for the Christmas festivities. There’s eating and drinking, shooting and hunting. Diana knows the game. But this year, things will be profoundly different.”
The trailer begins with the royals awaiting Diana’s arrival for a lavish dinner at Sandringham. Anticipating a difficult weekend, meanwhile, she faces herself in the bathroom mirror, saying: “Three days, that’s it.”
Like the previous preview, the new trailer also shows her receiving very specific instructions on how to act across the course of the weekend, which is filled with tense arguments, uncomfortable glances over dinner, overwhelming crowds of photographers, and tender moments with her children.
Spencer is written by Steven Knight and shot by Claire Mathon (the cinematographer behind the visuals of Atlantics and Portrait of a Lady on Fire). The score comes courtesy of Radiohead musician Jonny Greenwood, who has likened the biopic to a “horror film”.
The film is scheduled to be released in cinemas on November 5. Watch the first full trailer below.
