Watch the trailer for Netflix’s ‘explosive’ Britney Spears documentary

Arriving September 28, the film is said to explore the pop star’s conservatorship ‘without utilising the traumatic images that have previously defined her’

Netflix has shared the first full trailer for its upcoming documentary on Britney Spears’ conservatorship, titled Britney vs Spears

Following a short audio teaser posted earlier this week (September 21), the one-minute preview opens with a recording of Spears’ voice, saying: “I just want my life back.” In another clip, she says, “I’ve worked all my life... I don’t owe these people anything,” echoing her longstanding opposition to the conservatorship.

Several other voices also chime in on the legal arrangement, in what appear to be interviews conducted by director Erin Lee Carr. The trailer additionally includes scenes from protests affiliated with the #FreeBritney movement, as well as information about a confidential report on Spears’ case, which was apparently leaked during filming.

A press release from Netflix teases more of the content in Britney vs Spears. “Text messages and a voicemail as well as new interviews with key players make clear what Britney herself has attested,” it says: “The full story has yet to be told.”

Spears has previously called out other documentaries on her life and legal battles, including the New York Times film Framing Britney Spears. “These documentaries are so hypocritical,” she said in an Instagram post back in May. “They criticise the media and then do the same thing.”

Netflix, however, says that Britney vs Spears will tell “the explosive story of Britney’s life and her public and private search for freedom… without utilising the traumatic images that have previously defined her.”

Britney Spears directly asked a Los Angeles court to end her conservatorship back in June, making upsetting claims about her treatment under its rules, which have been in place since 2008. The pop star’s father, Jamie Spears, finally filed to terminate the legal arrangement earlier this month. On September 22, Britney’s lawyers renewed requests for Jamie’s immediate removal, according to NBC.
