A first trailer has been released for The Devil All The Time, an upcoming Netflix film starring Robert Pattinson and Tom Holland.
Directed by Antonio Campos (Simon Killer), the film – set to stream in September – is based on Donald Ray Pollock’s award-winning novel of the same name and comes with the tagline: “Some people are just born to be buried.”
Set in Knockemstiff, Ohio, in the interim between World War II and the Vietnam War, The Devil All The Time centres around young Arvin Russell (Tom Holland) and the cast of characters who converge around him as “he fights the evil forces that threaten him and his family”. This includes an “unholy preacher”, played by Pattinson, a “twisted couple” (Jason Clarke and Riley Keough), and a “crooked sheriff” (Sebastian Stan).
“Spanning the time between World War II and the Vietnam war, director Antonio Campos’ The Devil All The Time renders a seductive and horrific landscape that pits the just against the corrupted,” reads Netflix’s description of the movie.
The film also stars Eliza Scanlan (Little Women), Bill Skarsgård (It), Mia Wasikowska (The Double, Crimson Peak), and Harry Melling (AKA Dudley Dursley in Harry Potter).
“It was a hard book to adapt also because there was so much that we loved,” Campos told Entertainment Weekly earlier this month. “I’m a big fan of southern gothic and noir and this was a perfect marriage of the two. Sometimes you might be adapting a piece and you think like, ‘Well, there is a seed of a good idea here and I’ll just throw everything away and start from scratch’. In this case it was like, we love everything!”
Netflix will release The Devil All The Time on September 16 as part of several high profile titles on the platform, along with Charlie Kaufman’s I’m Thinking of Ending Things and Aaron Sorkin’s The Trial of the Chicago 7. Watch the trailer below.
