When the Academy announced the nominees for the Oscars earlier this week, many of us were sadly unsurprised at the absence of deserved nominees. Despite their Oscar-worthy performances, there are many stars who didn’t make the cut including Lupita Nyong’o for her role in Jordan Peele’s Us and Greta Gerwig, whose directorial work in Little Women was snubbed.
Among the absent was Adam Sandler, who definitely deserved a nomination for his leading role in the Safdie brothers film Uncut Gems. Not only was the Oscars snub a surprise for us, but also for the man himself, though – of course – his reaction is very Adam Sandler.
The disappointed actor wrote on Twitter: “Bad news: Sandman gets no love from the Academy. Good news: Sandman can stop wearing suits.” He also congratulated Kathy Bates, who played his mother in the 1998 comedy The Waterboy, for her Best Supporting Actress nomination for Richard Jewell, adding: “Congrats to all my friends who got nominated, especially Mama.”
The actor replied to Sandler’s tweet saying: “You was robbed!! But Mama loves you!!!” Bates was not the only star to show her support. Amid the outcry of fans, Lil Nas X, Ben Stiller, Jenna Fischer, and Paul Scheer also reached out. Lil Nas X wrote, “we still love u”, while Stiller said, “Sandman deserves all the love. Brilliant performance”, and Fisher added: “I loved Uncut Gems. You and all of the performances, the writing, directing, camera, sound design, and sound editing. Loved this movie.” Actor and comedian Scheer shared a photo of Keith Williams Richards, who plays tough guy Phil in the film, writing: “Don’t worry. I’m sending this guy to make a visit to all Academy voters to make sure the forms were filled out correctly. I have it all under control.”
Let’s not forget that it took Leo 22 years and six nominations to finally snag an Oscar. Better luck next year, Adam.
