Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite is getting made into a TV series

The Palme d’Or winner has been picked up by HBO

Fresh off its Golden Globe win for best foreign-language film, Bong Joon Ho’s self-described “family tragicomedy” Parasite is being adapted into an English-language limited series.

The Okja director is teaming up with Adam McKay whose celebrated films The Big Short and Vice have earned him multiple award nominations, and whose HBO series Succession has just won the Golden Globe for best drama series.

A strong contender for best picture at the Oscars, Parasite, is a social satire based around class, involving a working class family scamming themselves into a rich family to fund their existence, with deadly consequences.

Debuting at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival in May, it was awarded the prestigious Palme d’Or. The movie has since enjoyed stellar reviews, ranking number one  in our 2019 Dazed roundup of best films, as well as recently being named best picture of the year by the National Society of Film Critics.

While details of the series are still unclear – talks are currently underway with HBO, which won a fierce bidding war against Netflix on the rights – both Bong and McKay will executive produce, alongside CJ Entertainment’s Miky Lee, Cho Young Ki, and Francis Chung. McKay’s partner at Hyperobject Industries Kevin Messick will also exec produce. CJ’s Jerry Ko is co-exec producing, while CJ’s Fred Lee will act as producer.
