Forget about air-grabbing boybands or balladeers like Engelbert Humperdinck, fans of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK have launched a petition for some of its remaining contestants to represent the UK in Europe’s greatest politically swayed cock swing, Eurovision.
Last week on Drag Race, we saw the last six contestants left standing battle it out on the mic with a girl group themed challenge. Split into two groups; Filth Harmony, consisting of Crystal, Cheryl Hole, and The Vivienne; and Frock Destroyers, made up of Baga Chipz, Blu Hydrangea, Divina De Campo, each performed renditions of an original pop song “Break Up Bye Bye”.
To cut a long, diva drama story short, (spoilers) the Frock Destroyers won and everyone’s lost their shit over their banging version. The song has climbed to number two on the UK iTunes chart, and is on course for number 19 on the Official UK Singles Chart.
Amid the Frock Destroyers hype, as Gay Times reports, 5,400 signatures petitioning for the group to perform at Eurovision have already been garnered.
“The UK has long suffered dreadful entries that are not a true representation of our country, providing dreadful results,” the petition reads. “Because of Brexit the message has been that diversity and equality loses, let’s change that with Frock Destroyers.”
Drag Race UK has been doing the most to champion all the queer, campy best bits of British culture – a reference to adult film actors, gay icons, and meme-able women Rebecca More and Sophie Anderson’s Cock Destroyers duo is the most glorious yet.
Previous UK winners of the competition have included Lulu with “"Boom Bang-a-Bang" in 1969 and Bucks Fizz in 1981 – most famous for ripping off their multi-coloured parachute skirts. Apart from our occasional pity votes from Malta, the UK has steadily plummeted in the Eurovision score-board and hasn’t bagged a win in 22 years. Frock Destroyers 2020.
