Set eight years after the original, the new series will debut on WarnerMedia’s upcoming streaming service HBO Max and will consist of ten one-hour episodes. The show will centre on a new generation of privileged New York teens – expect headbands, repressed emotions, and – of course – elite fury. With original creators Joshua Safran, Josh Schwartz, and Stephanie Savage at the helm, the reboot will hopefully maintain the magic of the first Gossip Girl, though it hasn’t been confirmed if any of the original cast will return to their roles. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Safran has described the series as an extension of the original. Plot details read: “Eight years after the original website went dark, a new generation of New York private school teens are introduced to the social surveillance of Gossip Girl. The prestige series will address just how much social media – and the landscape of New York itself – has changed in the intervening years.” Aired for six seasons between 2007 and 2012, the original show – which starred Blake Lively, Leighton Meester, Penn Badgley, Chace Crawford, and Ed Westwick – is now worlds away from modern technology and advances in social media, so it will be interesting to how the new series adapts to the changed landscape. With remakes literally taking over (and imagination apparently at an all-time low), it’s unsurprising the cult favourite is making a return. How it will re-establish itself is yet to be seen, especially after the absolutely bonkers ending where – spoiler! – Dan was revealed to be Gossip Girl in arguably the dumbest three minutes in TV history.
