One follows the love life of a bisexual black man and the other is a black teen drama
Thank God for Issa Rae. The co-creator, executive producer and star of Insecure is continuing her reign over HBO as it has been revealed she is working on two new shows.
Him or Her, a single-camera show, will focus on the love life of a bisexual black man and “the distinctly different worlds and relationships he finds himself in”. She will be developing the show as an executive producer, but Travon Free created the series, based on his own experiences.
The second project, a teen drama, is entitled Sweet Life, and will be set in Los Angeles’ Windsor Hills neighbourhood, part of the “black Beverly Hills”. The title reportedly may come from a Frank Ocean song, “Sweet Life”, in which he sings about “Ladera Heights, the black Beverly Hills”. It was also inspired to her now viral black 90210 pitch from August.
Of the show, Rae said: “The idea for the series initially came from a joke pitch I presented to The New Yorker. I had always wanted to create a teen movie about Windsor Hills but never thought about doing a TV show. Once my joke TV pitch kind of went viral, I was like, ‘oh, duh. Let me just do my movie idea as a TV show.’”
There isn’t yet a release date for either series.
