Aside from an icon-off, you get “Rip the Script”, a new campaign video from Nike that brings together some of the world’s most recognisable names for six minutes of chaotic fun. With a slew of federation kit collaborations – including with Jacquemus, Slawn and Palace – the sportswear brand hasn’t been shy about going all-in on football ahead of this summer’s upcoming World Cup. The focus of its recent film, however, goes beyond just fashion, and captures the spirit of the game. According to the brand, “Rip the Script” is meant to be a “rallying cry for football lovers everywhere to ditch the playbook” and trust their gut. It’s an instinct well-documented with the film, which opens with Mbappè nailing a dramatic goal into the net before a fussy film director begs him to stop the theatrics and keep the shot simple. That argument sets off a wild chase throughout the studio, where footballs dribble (and crash) their way through various sets, coming across familiar faces like LeBron James, Channing Tatum and Young Miko along the way. In its own way, the video also captures the universality of the sport – around the world, a grassy field is hardly the only place football is played, with true footballers making any flat surface a domain for play. As this summer’s tournament approaches, “Rip the Script” is a reminder that sometimes, the playbook is meant to be ditched. Escape the algorithm!
