Rihanna’s New York street style makes up for that Met Gala no-show

The singer and businesswoman stepped out in NY this weekend, gracing us with looks from Comme des Garçons and Tom Ford-era Gucci

On May 6, the world waited for Robyn Rihanna Fenty to appear on the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It was the night of the Costume Institute’s annual Met Gala, and, as she does every year, Rihanna was set to kill it. But what was this we could hear through the grapevine? A flu? On the night of the Met? How could this be!

Despite that disappointment, Rihanna is a savvy woman. She’s attuned to our feelings. Somehow, she just knew how heartbroken we all were after her no-show, and has attempted to make up for it with two eye-popping street style looks in just one day.

The first sign that she was making up for lost time was during a sighting in New York yesterday, when she stepped out with partner A$AP Rocky and sons RZA and Riot wearing a pale blue ensemble. The focal point of the look was a faux-fur jacket from Gucci AW04 – designed by Tom Ford no less – which was casually wrapped over a Maison Margiela corset top. Okay, not too bad – we almost forgive you for the Met Gala.

After their family day out, Rocky and Rih then dropped the kids off somewhere safe and headed out for their own Mother’s Day date night in NYC. As always, Rocky looked suave in a button-up cardi and razor sharp slacks – but it was Rihanna who, of course, stole the show.

The US singer(?) matched her blood-red lip with a dramatic, slogan-heavy Comme des Garçons top, a skirt from her new favourite designer Jawara Alleyene, and topped the look off with some red tulle gloves and a Gucci horsebit clutch. Rihanna has made a slew of public appearances recently – from promoting Fenty Beauty in new season McQueen, to flogging her Fenty Puma trainers in new season Peter Do – but it’s this Comme look that really reminds us why she’s the queen of street style. That Met Gala raincheck isn’t looking too bad after all.
