...Miu Miu’s URL experience, thongs for your iPhone, and all the other news you missed this week
Palace has a long history of teaming up or otherwise paying homage to iconic musicians. Last year saw the label drop a Whitney Houston-inspired collection, and join forces with 90s Madchester legends the Happy Mondays on a collab, and in 2021, it looks like we’re in for more of the same. Dropping its new Frank Lebon-lensed lookbook today, this season sees the skate label tip its five-panel cap in the direction of heavy metal goth icon Alice Cooper and his album Constrictor, on a jacket dubbed the ‘Palace Cooper’ (loving your work boys).
Elsewhere, this week saw Virgil Abloh debut his latest collection for Off-White via innovative, content-rich platform Imaginary TV, and TikTok birth a new trend that has seen users time travelling through subcultures to recreate yearbook photo day looks. Meanwhile, Slow Factory announced the line-up of for the second semester of its free fashion education program for BIPOC, which aims to decolonise fashion knowledge and ‘teach the necessary and radical subjects you didn’t learn in school’.

Swedish artist Arvida Bystrøm’s collaboration with Internet Shop is here to offer some joy and gift inspo for the ultimate Valentine’s Day date: your phone. Alongside regular-sized lingerie, the label has created matching tiny thongs for your device. Who else deserves a treat on the big day more than the date you can turn off as and when you like? Fashion Roundtable called on the gov to save British fashion
Earlier this week think tank Fashion Roundtable called on members of the fashion industry to sign an open letter, urging the government to do more in regards to helping the industry deal with the effects of Brexit. Now, the ‘Don’t Make Fashion History’ campaign pushes the general public to play their part and contact their local MPs. Coach and Champion debuted a new collab
Coach and Champion might not be two brands you’d immediately put together, but this week it was revealed that they’d linked up for an unexpected collab. With the collection made up of lockdown appropriate dual-branded athleisurewear, the accompanying campaign sees the likes of Paloma Elsesser step in front of Alessandro Simonetti’s camera. Naturally, given the year is 2021 and pretty much everything happens on TikTok, the label also launches a new challenge called “How to Coach a Champion”. The collab is available here.

Fashion Trust Arabia announced 2021 Prize finalists
As the first of its kind in the MENA region, the FTA prize aims to support designers on the rise and for its third edition has recruited Dazed’s Jefferson Hack and Ib Karama as judges. Emerging out of the debut talent category is promising young creative Abdel El Tayeb Al Saddig – a Maison Margiela intern who used his final collection to explore the connection between French and Sudanese culture. Other designers making it to the shortlist include Mina Tahir, Roudha Al Mazroei and Malik Thomas Jalil Kydd.

Damien Hirst designs collection to be sold by Virgil Abloh
Damien Hirst has teamed up with Tetsuzo Okubo to create a collection of wearable art named ‘Beverly Hirst Recycler’, which will be sold on Virgil Abloh’s retail platform Canary Yellow. Starting on Saturday, February 7, the 70s punk rock-style pieces will be auctioned one by one each day. You can bid on pieces here.

ASOS swooped in to save Topshop
Last month news landed that ‘meeting outside big Topshop’ was no more, as the brand announced its Oxford Circus flagship was closing its doors due to the brand falling into administration. Many took to social media to reminisce on their fond memories of Topshop, but luckily for those lovers of Joni and Jaime jeans it has been announced that ASOS dropped a casual £265 million on buying the label – saving it from closure and moving it online.

Miu Miu launches a unique URL shopping pop-up
Mooching about in shops that aren’t your local supermarket might feel like a fairly distant memory right now, but luckily Miu Miu’s latest partnership will at least allow you a little taste of the experience. Launching on February 15 in Harrods, the label’s Miu Miu League pop-up draws on the SS21 show space and hosts the first drop of the 1950s-inspired collection. The pop-up will take place online initially before landing in the physical realm post-lockdown. The collection is available here.

Nike launches interactive book with Phaidon
Nike’s brand new book Better is Temporary gives an exclusive behind the scenes look into both the companies design process and philosophies. It is split into five different chapters, identifying key elements of the brand’s innovation, approach to collaboration, inclusion efforts and push for sustainability. Get your hands on it here.

Palm Angels dropped a new book
With the ongoing pandemic continuing to push the limits of of the fashion presentation, Palm Angels’ has chosen to debut its latest collection in a limited edition book. Published by Rizzoli, the tome brings together a series of imagemakers, including Lea Colombo and David Sims, to reimagine and interpret the collection through their own unique perspectives. The collection itself plays into the escapism of the contemporary world, tapping into the spirit of Jamaica as its main influence.

Karl Lagerfeld’s bodyguard announced a new book
Given their friendship spanned over three decades, it’s no surprise that Karl Lagerfeld’s personal assistant and bodyguard Sébastian Jondeau has no shortage of stories regarding the iconic designer. Now, almost two years after his death, the world can finally read some of these recollections courtesy of Jondeau’s brand new book. Famously elusive when it came to matters of his personal life, the book – entitled Ça va, cher Karl? (How are You, Dear Karl?) – discusses Lagerfeld’s fatherly bond with Jondeau.

Black in Fashion Council launch YouTube Series with Depop
To celebrate Black History Month in the US, the Black in Fashion Council has joined forces with resale platform Depop to guide and educate young black entrepreneurs. Taking the form of a YouTube series, which launches on February 16, members of the BIFC will lead discussions regarding everything from retail and business to creative processes.

Fashion Week is coming to TikTok
TikTok is home to an ever-growing fashion community, so this week’s announcement that the BFC is set to join forces with the app makes perfect sense. The sponsorship marks the opening of the 2021 NEWGEN applications, and ushers in a new generation of talent using innovative methods and platforms to present their work.

Versace announced it’s skipping MFW
As the latest brand to fall off the show schedule, Versace has announced it will not be showing a collection during Milan Fashion Week – which takes place Feb 23 to March 1. The luxury Italian label has decided to instead present a co-ed collection video, which will be released on March 5.
