Directed by Reiner Holzemer, who also brought us Dries Van Noten documentary Dries in 2017, the film sees Martin Margiela himself open up for the first time ever about his childhood, the importance of anonymity, his love of fashion, his inspirations, and, ultimately, the reason he decided to leave his eponymous label behind in 2009. Though Martin’s face remains hidden and only his hands are seen carefully flipping the pages of old sketchbooks and threading champagne corks onto string, through his own commentary and contributions from friends and peers including former mentor Jean Paul Gaultier, the film offers up an intimate portrait of a long-revered designer who, in fact, seems pretty unaffected by the adoration shown to him. “I promise you, when the movie is finished you will have the feeling that you’ve met the guy even though you haven’t,” says Holzemer. Essentially, it's a must-see. Watch the trailer below and read our full interview with Reiner Holzemer here.
