The photograph, first revealed on Loewe creative director Jonathan Anderson’s Instagram, come ahead of the label’s AW20 menswear show, which is set to take place in Paris this Saturday (January 18), and marks Rapinoe’s first-ever appearance in a fashion campaign. Shot by Steven Meisel, the image closes in on the footballer’s face: “Rapinoe’s trademark pink hair is highlighted by the solidity of the cobalt blue background. Her eyes are grinning, the tongue peeks a boo between the teeth, mimicking the soccer player’s signature expression when she wins,” explains the brand. In For Real, an accompanying series of short films directed by Benn Northover, Rapinoe says of the campaign, “I am so thrilled about this partnership with Loewe and Jonathan Anderson. Multiple worlds crashing together, creating something bigger, different, and more exciting than either could alone. To me, the goal of collaboration should not be to stand next to one another, but rather become something else, together.” Keep your eyes peeled for the full campaign.
