Iconic 90s supermodel Christy Turlington closed Marc Jacobs’ AW19 show

The designer’s intimate AW19 show was soundtracked by a live orchestra

Following shows from the likes of Gogo Graham, Telfar, Area, and Gauntlett ChengNew York Fashion Week AW19 drew to a close with Marc Jacobs back in his usual finale spot (after Savage x Fenty took the space last season). Here's what went down.

IT WAS A SUPER INTIMATE SHOW

As guests filed into the show venue, it was clear Jacobs had stripped things back this season. A row of silver stoolls lined a black, high-shine lacquered runway, and as the first model emerged from the darkness, lit only by a spotlight, a live orchestra began to play.

SOME OF YOUR FAVE SUPERMODELS WALKED

Walking the show this season were the likes of Gigi Hadid, Adut Akech, Sara Grace Wallerstedt, Fran Summers, and Kaia Gerber. It wasnt just about fashions new gen though. Jacobs also enlisted a few 90s icons in the form of Guinevere Van Seenus, Christina Kruse, and Christy Turlington, to tread the runway for him.

THE COLLECTION WAS ALL ABOUT DARK BEAUTY

For AW19, Jacobs explained he'd wanted to explore a dark beauty: “It’s a dark angel kind of beauty... But still an angel,” his show notes read. This manifested in a collection that played with volume and proportion, with wide-shouldered capes, structured prom dresses with circle skirts, and huge trapeze-style coat all key. Presented in a mainly muted colour palette shot through with flashes of rich pinks, blues, soft greens, and pale lemon, much of the offering was heavily embellished, with ruffles, ostrich feathers, and intricate crystal beading all featuring heavily throughout. Basically, the Marc Jacobs girl is getting ready for a party next season.

THE ACCESSORIES WERE PRETTY ECLECTIC

...including sparkly tights, metallic party shoes, and leopard fur (faux of course) box bags. Many of the models also wore knitted hats with feathers sprouting from the top of them, as well as long wool scarves, which, when paired with the cocktail dresses that made up much of the collection, gave the impression the girls were perhaps running late for whatever party it was they were going to: or maybe making a break from one, given Jacobs’ mention of fallen angels.
