Pirelli announces its 2019 calendar photographer

Albert Watson follows on from Tim Walker in the long list of Pirelli Calendar’s acclaimed photographers

Since 1964, Pirelli has published some of fashion’s most provocative images as part of its iconic annual calendar. After tapping revered fashion photographer Tim Walker for its 2018 iteration, the brand has now found its new recruit in Scottish photographer Albert Watson who this year shot the calendar between Miami and New York.

The photographer is not new to the fashion world as he’s been shooting for Vogue since the 70s – with his photographs appearing on more than 100 covers – as well as Harper’s Bazaar and Rolling Stone. Walker’s style isn’t restricted to fashion as he also shot beautiful landscapes and musicians – Michael Jackson, Mick Jagger and Prince to cite only a few – with the same search for perfection and mastery of technique. Some of his most iconic pictures include portraits of Steve Jobs, Alfred Hitchcock and 19-year-old Kate Moss posing nude for her birthday.

What the calendar’s theme will be is uncertain for now, but given Watson’s impressive archive and the unconventional direction the Pirelli calendar has been going since Annie Leibovitz in 2016, we’re sure it’s going to be one to keep your eyes peeled for.
