Nicolas Ghesquière unveils Grace Coddington collab at Vuitton’s Cruise show

The designer presented the latest collection for the Parisian house near Cannes

Following on from Maria Grazia Chiuri’s dramatic Diorodeo, last night Louis Vuitton presented its own Cruise 2019 show in the south of France. Here’s everything you need to know.

THE SHOW WAS HELD AT A MODERN ART MUSEUM

Forgoing a far-flung location – Nicolas Ghesquière’s previous Cruise shows have been presented in Kyoto, Rio de Janeiro, and Palm Springs – this year’s took place in the Fondation Maeght, near Cannes. One of the designer’s favourite places to visit, the models weaved through the Joan Miró labyrinth among artworks and sculptures by Pierre Bonnard, Kandinsky, and Alberto Giacometti. “I’ve known this place for twenty-five years and I love coming here regularly,” the designer said. “It’s an intelligent, beautiful site. A place that has spirit, installations have a special rapport with nature and the seasons.”

THE COLLECTION CELEBRATED ECCENTRICITY

After the recent announcement that the women’s artistic director would be renewing his contract, the designer continued what he has become known for at the French house. The latest collection featured ultra-chic clothes that had a distinct futurist 80s flair – see: the oversized blazers and sunglasses. “What is it today to be an original, (someone) who has her own way of dressing,” the designer told Vogue of his inspiration. “I love those people who are eccentric.” Elsewhere, a couple of cowgirl-inspired looks paraded down the runway with silk, front-tied dresses paired with LV-monogrammed trim hats (naturally). To finish, Ghesquière went for glamour, seen via glittering, embellished dresses made from giant paillettes and feather-covered tops that blew in the wind.

THERE WAS A COLLABORATION WITH GRACE CODDINGTON

The show notes announced that for the collection Ghesquière had teamed up with legendary stylist Grace Coddington to create accessories that reflected both her and the designer’s love of animals. Models carried bags in the shape of her cats, and his dog, all drawn by the stylist. Elsewhere, Sara Grace Wallerstedt sashayed with a blown out ginger mane, not dissimilar from Coddington’s. On the soundtrack, Jennifer Connelly read excerpts from the stylist’s memoir. As for the woman herself, she sat front and centre wearing silk LV-printed pyjamas with illustrations of her cats on them.

THE UGLY SNEAKER GOT AN UPGRADE

Louis Vuitton’s SS18 show saw the debut of the Archlight, the giant, futuristic-looking trainer to end all trainers. It returned for Cruise, this time in over-the-knee and ankle boot versions. Next season you’ll be sure to see everyone wearing the new colourways, including art prints inspired by the show’s location, and all-gold versions.

AND... A NEW MAKE-UP TREND?

You may have heard of the burning bush (if not, see the Bible) but what about burning brows? Courtesy of make-up artist Pat McGrath, two of the models took to the runway with burning roses in the centre of their foreheads. Why? Well, why not? Forget any of the new brow trends you might have seen recently, flaming foliage tops them all.
