@badgalririFashion / Feature2017 was the year of the Gucci glitter bodysuitAs worn by Rihanna and Frank Ocean – sooo basically everyoneShareLink copied ✔️December 21, 2017FashionFeatureText Rae Witte Gucci has had nothing short of an extended moment following Alessandro Michele coming on board in 2015. So it should come as a surprise to absolutely no one that it was also responsible for one of the most viral outfits of this year. During Gucci’s AW17 show in Milan in February, Michele sent quite a few very memorable items down the runway in a massive 120 look show. There was the floor-length turquoise cape with embroidered pink hummingbirds, a blue, torso-baring tiger print onesie, and even a few Gucci-branded sweatbands. The most notable? A Swarovski crystal-emblazoned catsuit, complete with face-covering, branded vest, and denim booty shorts. It would become one of the year’s most defining items. In April, Rihanna attended Coachella as an attendee, not a performer. As Rihanna Rihanna’d, among the notoriously near-nude attendees, she wore her layered right-off-the-runway, unavailable-to-anyone-who-isn’t-Rihanna Gucci look, including the throwback logo Coco Capitán collaborated tank and obligatory Coachella-attendee cutoffs. Trading in the strappy sandals Michele sent down the runway less than two months prior for her own Fenty Puma platforms to wear in the crowd, she watched Migos perform dripped in Swarovski crystals in the California desert heat and dropped two iconic ‘grams captioned: “I can't go home yet, cuz enough people ain't seen my outfit” and “phresh out.” In August, Kim Kardashian made a return to her flashier, pre-Kanye, pre-Yeezy Season way of dressing, taking an entirely different approach to Rihanna when she opted for the bedazzled body glove. Ditching the over-layers of Rih’s festival look and the original runway iteration, Kim K opted to accentuate her coveted curves in the crystallised catsuit with perfect Cher-like hair and nude pumps. In her Snapchat video she simply said, “Set vibes,” but we are yet to see the final selects from whatever shoot Kardashian was shining for that day. Similar to the internet-breaking Gucci suit, Rihanna would be the first to wear Saint Laurent’s strikingly similar disco ball-esque Niki Boots in March, just a week after they hit the runway, but it was Keyshia Ka’oir that went ahead as the first woman to do both. Gucci Mane’s wife stepped out in glitter from head to toe at the BET hip hop Awards just a few short weeks before their equally as iced out wedding. The Gucci suit and Saint Laurent boot combo was the perfect precursor to the nuptials, and could arguably be the closest ‘fit to the Kira Kira filter without the app. Last but far from least, Frank Ocean joined in on the Gucci glam fun. Following Ocean’s super top secret ballroom culture-inspired 30th birthday bash this past October in Los Angeles, a few photographs made the rounds on the internet with Frank in the $4,000 pair of sparkly leggings. One of many outfit changes throughout his party, the singer also wore an asymmetrical red one-sleeve top, black heeled boots and $1200 Gucci pineapple sunglasses. During a year where streetwear has gone full mainstream (we saw casual on the red carpet at the Met Ball this year!), this crew sealed the deal on 2017 being the year of Gucci’s crystal catsuit, although the jury is still out on whether or not mere mortals could ever pull it off like these icons.
