The actress, singer and other-half to Serge Gainsbourg was one of the most agenda-setting style icons of the 60s and 70s, famed for her then-provocative see-through dresses and super short miniskirts. Today Saint Laurent unveiled images of the star wearing the house’s iconic ‘Le Smoking’ jacket, photographed by Hedi Slimane as part of his Saint Laurent music project. Birkin joins a roster of musical icons who have been photographed by Slimane since the project’s inception in 2013, including Courtney Love, Marilyn Manson and Kim Gordon among others. This isn’t her first outing for Saint Laurent however – she has been dressed by the house on multiple occasions and sat front row at its most recent (AW16 womenswear) show at Paris Fashion Week earlier this month. This show, which was staged in a traditional haute couture salon, saw Slimane riff on 80s fashion and glamour: shoulders were exaggerated, hemlines were high, necklines were plunging and waists were belted. As rumours of his departure from the house continue to fly, this show and the latest instalment of his music project show that at Saint Laurent, it’s business as usual – for the time being at least.
