FashionAfter DarkHari Nef: After Dark at New York Fashion Week – #1Clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right: Hari Nef on the first night of NYFW, from the VFiles Made afterparty to smoking on the roof of The StandardShareLink copied ✔️September 6, 2014FashionAfter DarkTextHari Nef After featuring the young New Yorker as one of Mike the Ruler's kingdom in our autumn 2014 issue, we invited the actress, writer and founding member of Chez Deep to give us a glimpse into the nightlife of New York Fashion Week. Stay tuned for more After Dark. So far, fashion week’s most persuasive showing has been from Vodka Red-Bull®. Vodka Red Bull® is everywhere this season! And it’s free! I usually reserve Vodka Red Bull® for emergencies—and generally wouldn’t dare consume one after 1:00AM—but this week I don’t have options. Vodka Red Bull® is loud, proud, and open. New York Fashion Week begs to be measured—in parties, shows, trends. For the moment, I have decided to measure mine in Vodka Red Bulls®. VODKA RED BULL® 1 The kids are out tonight, and they’re thirsty. I link arms with Ladyfag (hers is covered in red latex); we elbow away from the bar through the crowd at Webster Hall, where VFiles has just presented the third installment of their web-sourced #VFILESMADEFASHION series. We find a dark corner and scheme for a few minutes (click here for the scoop!). Eventually, Ladyfag drifts off somewhere in the crowd, as even your closest friends are wont to do during fashion week. I’m alone for a moment. The VFiles logo gleams on a giant screen. I smile. VFiles is family. A year and a half ago, I was interning for them. Now I sit second row. New York rushes you along, especially if you’re young, persistent…maybe a little thirsty. I’ve always seen the fashion weeks as these beautiful, awful signposts; they throw you to the fire so you know where you are. I’m thirsty. I need another drink. VODKA RED BULL® 2 At least 3 people comment on how thin I am, and how great my boobs look. I’m wearing a little black dress—the “Hari” dress from Harrison Koiwai—and it only covers one boob at a time. The left one is freshly pierced. Robot MoonJuice tries to nibble on it, but I redirect him because I don’t want my piercing to get infected. Fashion week makes the boys go wild! VODKA RED BULL® 3 I’m dancing! A girl with thick-rimmed black glasses shimmies up next to me; she looks about 12. I recognize her instantly. It’s Sabrina Fuentes: the youngest competitor on Intern Files, VFiles’ new web series where an ensemble of young hopefuls competes for a VFiles internship. I whisper in her ear: “you know, I used to intern at VFiles. Never give up! You could sit second row one day.” VODKA RED BULL® 4 Up & Down is a shitshow! It’s my favorite club in New York City, and tonight it’s packed. I mean, VFiles was packed, but packed with club kids and indie stylists. Up & Down is packed with tall blonde women in witchy black wide-brimmed hats. There are men too, but they’re not wearing designer streetwear. VODKA RED BULL® 5 I stumble upstairs and reunite with Ladyfag at her table. A coterie of It-Folks await me: Ruth Gruca, Adam Radakovich, Derek Blasberg, Greg Krelenstein. I kiss them all twice; they kiss me back twice. A light goes on somewhere behind me, so I turn. Kiesza is performing in the DJ booth. Hey! That’s cool, I think. “Hey! That’s cool,” says Greg. VODKA RED BULL® 6 I’m in a cab. It’s time to go home. Adam Werner texts me. The cab makes a left on 9th. I arrive. Never give up! I’m on the roof of the Standard Hotel, outside the infamous Boom Boom Room. I’m waiting for my friends, which means I’m alone, so I have no choice but to light up a cigarette. A song comes on the speakers: “Stuck in The Middle with You” by Stealer’s Wheel. Clowns to the left of me… Jokers to the right… It’s the first night of New York Fashion Week.
