Appropriation has been spawning creativity for thousands of years and more than ever as we charge through the Tumblr chapter of the digital age. This shoot by Dazed's Fashion Editor Emma Wyman and photographic duo Erik Hart and Tatiana Leshkina (HART+LESHKINA) is another example of the endless downpour of ideas that can spring from one concept, here approaching the M.I.A. x Versus Versace collection with an entirely different zing. The shoot reworks the capsule collection according to a new set of creative codes, the result throwing the cheekiness of M.I.A.’s designs into bold relief with playful bodily interactions set against a stark landscape. Models Tom Gaskin and Ruby Bryne at D1 breathe new life into the hypnotically garish collection with Dazed demeanors leaking a ‘Dirt off Your Shoulder’ attitude from within. It’s a different route than that taken by the Versus campaign, in which Jaime Martinez snaps M.I.A. and her mates wreaking havoc amongst the bootlegging stalls of East London’s markets. But hey, that’s the magic of art feeding art.
