As a testament to its unifying, machine heavy strength and as an essential outdoor winter item, the boot’s workman solid silhouette was inspired by the construction of traditional Norwegian hunting boots. It’s also remained unchanged over the past two decades, exuding a timeless essence, yet has seen over 100 various innovative material combinations and colourways since its launch in 1991.Transcending generations, there were those of us who remember Cats from teenage school days, and it’s still all about that distinctive yellow stripe and Cat box logo. Although the past twenty years have seen a unique embrace of workwear within fashion. In a similar, parallel vein to certain skateboard and streetwear labels whose fashion heritage and integrity stem from functionality and symbolism, workwear, and brands like Cat in particular are elemental in their celebration of craft. From the creation of the footwear itself (quadruple stitching and Goodyear Welt construction process) through to what workwear in its essence represents - an honest, generations-old, grafting attitude and a tough, durable, outdoors fashion exterior, Cat strikes a chord with a roll call of fashion designers. One of which is MAN designer Martine Rose, whose passion for innovative functionality pushes classic silhouettes forward, merging the industrial with a hint of luxury. Her collaboration with Cat on the iconic Colorado boot adds a fashion-led elegance to the classic, heavy set boot.Celebrating their anniversary, Cat will unveil special editions for Autumn/Winter 2011 with suede, plaid and premium leather versions. This also marks a special collaboration project with Dazed, and the opportunity for Dazed readers to feature in an upcoming fashion story in the December issue of Dazed & Confused magazine. We’re launching an open casting for our readers, with five winners to be styled by the Dazed fashion team and shot by a celebrated Dazed family photographer. Deadlines for submissions are 5th October, and the project will be photographed in London, the week of 10th October. The shortlisted entries will also win themselves a pair from the current Cat range as well as an exclusive pair of the Cat Martine Rose boots.
