Audrey Hobert has quickly become the pop scene’s most chalant forerunner, with breezy, peppy lyrics and an anti-popstar demeanour. As she tours her debut album Who’s the Clown, she takes to the stage in a comically oversized beige trench coat, thrashing her strawberry-blonde hair to a pit of fans screaming along as if they’re in their own bedrooms.

It’s a less polished take on stardom that runs throughout her discography and pop persona, as she also offers a chaotic, messier vision of what pop-girl beauty can also look like. “I once read that some people’s beauty can’t be captured,” sings the star on her track “Thirst Trap”. The lyric was inspired by a quote Hobert found online, suggesting that beauty is best experienced in motion. Below, we caught up with the quirked-up alt-pop star ahead of her show to talk about her “low-effort chic” beauty aesthetic, her new ILIA edit, and more.
