The internet erupted at the announcement, and a range of groups are already calling for his resignation. Now, a radio interview which he gave in 2011 has resurfaced, in which he calls liberal women “a bunch of dykes”. The man in charge of shaping Donald Trump’s policies has made his fortune by selling his trashy brand of clickbait bigotry to other angry dudes. The site peddles hatred of pretty much every marginalized group: Muslims, transgender people, immigrants and Jews, to name a few. Bannon also appears to dislike women. In his interview with Political Vindication Media, he decries the “unintended consequences of the women’s liberation movement”, which have created “a bunch of dykes that came from the Seven Sisters Schools [America’s women-only liberal arts colleges].” Breitbart has a long history of misogyny. Its writers have previously claimed that “birth control makes women unattractive and crazy”. They’ve told women to stop whingeing about online harassment and and simply “log off” if they were bothered by of rape and death threats. It frequently publishes the work of Milo Yiannopoulos, including this thinkpiece about whether having progressive politics makes women ugly. Bannon himself also has a troubling track record of dealings with women. Police charged him for domestic violence against his ex-wife, who claimed he “grabbed her by the neck during an argument, and smashed the phone when she tried to call the police. The case was dismissed when Ms Piccard failed to appear in court - she later claimed that he had threatened her in order to stop her testifying. A former employee has also accused Bannon of sexual harrassment. Steve Bannon is no longer just churning out sexist content for his fans in the dark corners of the internet. He’s got a White House position where he can design policies on issues such as abortion, LGBT rights, and immigration, which could have real and violent consequences for all American women.
