Teenagers love stealing property that belongs to the state. Nicking traffic cones is a big thing for young UK drunks until suddenly, out of nowhere, it becomes chronically uncool and the responsiblity is left with younger generations to plunder British roadsides for awkwardly large decorations to adorn their rubbish shared accommodation.

Over in America, the number 420 is synonymous with getting stoned (long story) and across the great American highways are mileposts signifyings the distance you’ve been rattling along in your dreamy convertible. Most highways don’t extend over 400 miles, but some get to 420. These “420 Mile” signposts are hot property in America, coveted by stoners who don’t mind the idea of taking it down and sticking it in the boot.

In order to deter thieves, the state of Idaho has changed the “420” sign on U.S Highway 95 to “419.9” in order to make it less desirable. According to Associated Press, Washington and Colorado have also changed “420” signs to “419.9” because of repeated thefts.

Were I a weed-lover with a penchant for theft, I think I’d want the “419.9” sign just as bad.
