The revival of David Lynch’s cult series has been pushed back, but wipe away your tears with what we know so far
First, the bad news: you’ll have to wait a while to weird out with Twin Peaks faves Agent Dale Cooper and the Log Lady. The series’ revival, helmed by Mark Frost and David Lynch, has been pushed back to 2017. Originally slated to run in 2016 on Showtime, Frost has said in a recent interview that the series will be “coming out on Showtime sometime in 2017.”
The series’ comeback has been held up at every turn. Lynch pulled out of the project altogether back in April due to contract disputes with the network, only to U-turn with an announcement in May that he would return to direct. Does this new setback mean there are even more complications? It’s not entirely clear what is holding it up – but hey, before you get pissy, remember good things come to those who wait. And, er, maybe the extra time will make it even better. Dry your tears with what we know about the reboot so far:
THE STORY WILL CONTINUE 25 YEARS LATER WITH 18 EPISODES
Picking up 25 years after the series ended, the story resumes in present day. So does that mean eerie DMs on Twitter and Tinder swipes at the Double R Diner? Probably not, but it shouldn’t be totally ruled out. “It is not a remake,” explains series co-creator Mark Frost. “The story continues. The seeds of where we go were planted where we've been.” In fact, Frost is writing a book called The Secret Lives of Twin Peaks, which will fill in the mammoth gap between then and now. It will be published before the show airs, so we will definitely maybe need a Google Chrome extension to block all spoilers ahead of its debut (please?)
MANY OF THE ORIGINAL CAST WILL RETURN
Agent Dale Cooper – played by Kyle MachLachlan – is back, baby. He’ll play the lead. As he dished to the Wall Street Journal, “what (Lynch) said specifically about (Dale Cooper) has made me really, really excited to get back into that world.” Also returning? Sherilynn Fenn (who played Audrey Horne), Dana Ashbrook (who played Bobby Briggs), Sheryl Lee (who played Maddy Ferguson), and possibly David Duchovny (who played DEA Agent Dennis) and Russ Tamblyn (who played Dr. Lawrence Jacoby).
IT WILL BE SHOT ENTIRELY DIGITALLY
Forget celluloid. The new 18-episode series will be shot digitally – unlike many of TV’s modern counterparts that have stuck to film like Mad Men and True Detective. During a three-hour Q&A sesh with MA film students, Lynch made his stance on film clear, responding to a question about whether or not he’d shoot on film by saying, “No, no, no. It would be ridiculous. It’s all gonna end up on TV anyway. So many things get lost from celluloid to the final… whatever you’re showing on.”
COMPOSER ANGELO BADALAMENTI WILL BE DOING THE MUSIC
The signature bassline pluck of Twin Peaks’ opening song will most likely be dusted off with composer Angelo Badalamenti confirmed to hone the sounds of the new series. Badalamenti’s longtime collaboration with David Lynch has been unmatched. Their partnership began in 1986 with Blue Velvet and his eerie synth score was basically its own beautiful-yet-unsettling character in the series.
