The Bronx-born photographer and director Renell Medrano is back with the second issue of what she calls “the coldest magazine on Earth”. Expanding on her New York–inspired debut, the second volume of ICE Magazine heads south to channel the spirit of Atlanta’s Georgia Peaches.
“I picked Atlanta because I feel a strong connection to the South,” she explains. “Every time I visit, the energy down there reminds me of home. There’s a natural and raw beauty to everyone I meet. Ice is an extension of myself – a platform to spotlight women and creatives wherever I go.” Fronting the issue is rap icon Eve, whom Medrano deems the ultimate ICE Girl.
That vision continues through the all-women crew Medrano has assembled: returning collaborators Raisa Flowers on makeup and Marika-Ella Ames on styling, joined this time by Amidat Giwa on hair. Together, they build an environment where women can embrace sensuality outside of the male gaze – a reclamation of power long denied to Black women and women of colour, especially within the industry.
Inspired by her personal archive of Players magazine, Medrano’s ICE is about the “around-the-way girl” in all her dimensions. Flick through pages of glossy portraits and honest conversations, the magazine offers up a refreshing take on the way women see and celebrate each other.
