He doesn’t really need an introduction – Leigh Bowery is undoubtedly one of the most recognisable figures of 20th-century pop culture. Since his emergence on the post-punk nightlife scene in 1980s London, Bowery has cast a long and inimitable shadow across the worlds of fashion, art and culture, moving from the status of outré cult figure to [almost] a household name. As a performance artist, fashion designer, television personality, musician, club promoter and general provocateur, Bowery moved through mediums and venues, challenging normative ideas of propriety, gender, sexuality, taste and aesthetics. His influence is visible in the work of figures such as Alexander McQueen, Anohni, Michael Clark and countless more.

Now, Bowery is being celebrated in a major exhibition at Tate Modern. Opening in February, Leigh Bowery! will trace the life, work and legacy of this outrageous, beloved artist. This immersive retrospective will allow visitors rare insights into the now-vaunted creative scenes happening in London and New York while also bringing together Bowery’s eclectic work and his collaborations with art world luminaries including Michael Clark, Charles Atlas, Nick Knight, Fergus Greer, John Maybury, Nicola Rainbird and Lucian Freud.
