While Christmas doesn’t automatically bring to mind our alternative friends, this December one pop-up shop is making Christmas a little easier for Goths everywhere, bringing a unique combination of alternative gifts and artwork to London. The aptly named Goth Shop will open at London’s Truman Brewery next week and include a pop-up shop, gallery, and event space. Described by founder and curator Faye Dowling as a mix of “high art and underworld culture”, the shop will sell a range of books and zines alongside handmade Christmas cards, artist wrapping paper, and “Goth Christmas stocking fillers”. Throughout its ten-day residency, the pop-up will also exhibit works from over 25 different artists and designers. This will include a series of unseen Nick Cave portraits by photographer Derek Ridgers, artist Tyler Udall, and a specially commissioned piece by neon light experts God’s own Junkyard. In addition to indulging in “all things dark, beautifully damned and spooky”, Goth Shop will also host a number of events such as talks, artist signings, and performances. This will include a t-shirt making session from renowned New York artist James Concannon, whose pieces have previously been worn by Lady Gaga, and DJ sets from artists across the goth/alt/darkwave scene, including one from The Batcave founder DJ Johnny Slut. Bringing its unique combination of alternative gifts, art and events to London, Goth Shop promises to offer “everything the darkest of hearts desires for the perfect Alternative Christmas”.
