By amplifying the surreal in the mundane, Janina Pedan’s set designs have brought her to the attention of some of the most innovative names around. From her flower-filled chopped cars installation at Simone Rocha’s flagship store to her eerie contributions to SHOWstudio’s Halloween special featuring Ruth Bell and Binx Walton, the Ukrainian-born designer is in demand across the board.

Fellow Dazed 100-ers Claire Barrow and Grace Wales Bonner are among the arsenal of creatives she has sculpted for, while her editorial credits span sci-fi spreads in AnOther, Tarmac-covered backdrops for Dazed, and a super high-gloss still life for Vanity Fair – not bad for someone who picked up the basics of her trade from YouTube tutorials.

For Pedan, who credits photographer Ben Toms’ belief in her talent with giving her a leg-up into the industry, collaboration and authenticity are more important than scaling the hierarchy of fashion. “When I do my more commercial shoots and I realise how the rest of the industry works, I’ve been shocked,” she recently told AnOther. “I suppose I’ve been in quite a protective bubble made up of people who are really nice – interesting, normal people who don’t have anything to prove.”
