New Yorker Hayes’ canvases are equally enamoured of anime and Botticelli, Titian and Twitter. “Lately, it’s mostly been about abstract expressionism – especially Willem de Kooning and the juxtaposition with Sailor Moon,” says the platinum-blonde artist, whose art residency “Holding Court” features in the new issue and can be viewed in the gallery below. “But now I’ve started making these little Pokémon portraits.” When she isn’t cooking up solo shows and creating new video work for the likes of Alexander Wang and Proenza Schouler, Hayes can be spotted at Beyoncé parties dressed like an aristocrat.

Jeanette Hayes: I’ve had the same best friend since the first day of high school.
What’s the best road trip you’ve ever been on?
Jeanette Hayes: Every 4th of July I go to Chicago and drive an hour away to Indiana for fireworks – it’s not a big deal, but the best every time.
When was your last run-in with the cops? What happened?
Jeanette Hayes: I’m like a model citizen so nothing too exciting. Perhaps my last run-in with the police was a cop holding the door open for me.
