Bumblebees, skeleton fingers and bright blue eyeballs – the ingredients of Delettrez’s laboratory read more like the contents of a mad shaman’s medicine cabinet. The boundary-pushing jewellery designer, who is also the daughter of Silvia Fendi, concocts mischievously macabre treasures in her spellbinding work. “I put the metal in front of me and the metal talks,” she explains. “It’s a constant metamorphosis.”
What was your defining pop culture moment of 2014?
Delfina Delettrez: Miley first twerking with my piercing lip earring!
What’s your favourite song and movie of 2014?
Delfina Delettrez: I loved everything about Ida by Pawel Pawlikowski. The song I cannot stop listening to is “Here Comes the Night Time” by Arcade Fire, and I also rediscovered “Silence is Sexy” by Einstürzende Neubauten.
How do you think style and pop culture will change in 2015?
Delfina Delettrez: The essence of pop culture today lies in the conscious cross-references of the arts: television programs, advertising, fashion, literature, film and music are becoming ever more co-dependent, influencing each other deeply. The common platform is, of course, the screen to which we are always connected, and the role of the viewer-consumer is essential.
I believe that in 2015 we will be more ‘connected’ than ever. Since I consider ‘style’ to be a very personal means of self-expression, I hope that popular culture and the images by which we are surrounded will serve as inspiration to a 2015 full of brave, individual styles. Risking, pushing the limit and being different will be essential in 2015.
Sum up what we can expect from you in 2015.
Delfina Delettrez: A starting point but also an arrival point: the upcoming opening of a Delfina Delettrez boutique on Mount Street!
What’s the most exciting thing about the music/film/fashion industry today?
Delfina Delettrez: I believe that this cross-pollination of the arts is what truly manages to keep us on the edge, keeping the audience waiting to see how ideas and projects will develop in each field. New technologies influence music as much as film and fashion and as I am a big fan of news in the tech world (see my latest collection, named HANDroid!) I am always very excited about recent developments.
What new skill did you learn this year?
Delfina Delettrez: I started to take tango lessons!
Who’s an unsung cultural hero that you discovered this year?
Delfina Delettrez: I discovered Gualtiero Jacopetti’s amazing shockumentaries – a must-see! Just thinking about the huge risks he personally underwent to give us this wonderful footage – he deserves the greatest award!
What’s the most surprising thing we’d find out if we looked at your phone?
Delfina Delettrez: That I always have some emergency cash between the cover and the screen.
Who should have been at number one on the Dazed 100?
Delfina Delettrez: David Lynch.
