Xavier Dolan called him “a ticking bomb” and we’re inclined to agree – in the cult director’s Cannes Jury prize winner Mommy, the 17-year-old actor sets the screen ablaze with a ferocious performance as the movie’s troubled, hyperactive lead. “I was inspired by Brad Pitt in 12 Monkeys,” he says of his pent-up insanity and pared-down tenderness in the role, with which he emerges alongside Dolan as a flagbearer for French-Canadian cinema. “I like to go into areas that allow me to explore not just the mental side of a character but also their physical aspects,” he explains, recalling (literally) being crucified for a role in a controversial music video for French new wave outfit Indochine. “I’d love to act in parts where I have to learn new disciplines, like martial arts.” With Mommy released this spring and Pilon about to become the new name to watch out for, he’ll surely get his chance.
