“I don’t think it’s pressure,” 17-year-old actress Dever shrugs in response to all the “next-big-thing” lists she’s been deservedly featured in just lately – and oh look, here comes another one. “It’s cool to think about, but I try not to let it get to my head.” She played a self-harming teen in a treatment facility in last year’s sleeper hit Short Term 12, and is now dodging helicopter mum Jennifer Garner in Jason Reitman’s drama about sexting and online secrets, Men, Women & Children. What’s coming in 2015? “Music with my sister, more films, maybe some guest star roles!” But like she says, no pressure.

What was your defining pop culture moment of 2014?

Kaitlyn Dever: When Jimmy Fallon started The Tonight Show. That was a big moment for me in pop culture, for sure! He has always been one of my favourites; he’s hilarious and seems like a real cool guy. It just seems like he has so much fun in what he does and I think that is awesome! The lip-syncing skits he does with Emma Stone, for example, are my favourite thing, they’re sooo funny! I’ve been watching him since SNL and followed him to Late Night and now The Tonight Show. I love his show and it’s my dream to be on it someday!

How would you sum up what you do in a sentence?

Kaitlyn Dever: I become a different person for my job, which makes some people laugh and others cry, but regardless of which it is… I love what I do.

What’s your favourite song and movie of 2014?

Kaitlyn Dever: My favourite song from 2014 would be “Do You” by Spoon, and my favourite movie would probably be The Skeleton Twins. But I loved a lot of movies this year. So many great ones – it’s hard to pick just one.

In 15 words, sum up what we can expect from you in 2015.

Kaitlyn Dever: Music with my sister, more films, maybe some guest star roles. And lots of driving!

What's the most exciting thing about the music/film/fashion industry today?

Kaitlyn Dever: There are always so many new and exciting things happening all the time it’s hard to keep up! But I’ve been excited mostly about the new music happening right now. There have been so many great concerts, new songs and awesome new albums with amazingly talented people. I’m going to see Fleetwood Mac for the second time in December. So I am very stoked about that! Jack White’s new album is mind-blowing as well, and there’s my favorite singer-songwriter Lissie, to name just a few.

What new skill did you learn this year?

Kaitlyn Dever: I don’t know if this is really considered a “skill”, but this year I’ve been going to Cardio Barre a lot with my sis, and we love it so much! It’s basically just ballet and cardio.

Who's an unsung cultural hero that you discovered this year?

Kaitlyn Dever: My hero would have to be Malala Yousafzai, because she brings awareness among many cultures about girls’ rights in school. I think that is really empowering because at such a young age she is able to make a big difference in so many people’s lives and will continue to do great things.

What’s the most surprising thing we'd find out if we looked at your phone?

Kaitlyn Dever: Intense Snapchat battles with my sis.

Who should have been at number one on the Dazed 100?

Kaitlyn Dever: JOAQUIN PHOENIX!!!! I LOVE HIM!! He’s just an amazing actor who is so versatile and can completely transform himself into any character.
