Gliding between neo-soul, vocals in the tribal Zambian language Chewa, rock-infused guitar pumps and a rap verse, new single “NOID” continues the genre-blending sonic universe that Tyler, the Creator unveiled last week on lead single “St. Chroma”. This is the second track to arrive from the rapper’s newly announced album CHROMAKOPIA, which is set to release October 28. Both music videos are tinged in a sepia-esque filter and depict Tyler wearing an eerie flesh-coloured face mask.
In this new self-directed video, Tyler appears in a paranoid state, peeking out between curtains as he raps about not being able to “buy a home in private” and moving “around the block, eyes glued to the rear-view [mirror]”. Elsewhere, in a wide aerial shot, Tyler’s shadow appears to move of its own volition, holding its fist above its head as Tyler frantically stomps around an empty concrete pitch.
The video also features a cameo from The Bear actress Ayo Edebiri who appears in a similarly unhinged state, oscillating between laughter and pointing a gun at the camera. Both this and previous single “St. Chroma” credit all production to Tyler, raising hopes of a follow-up to Grammy award-winning album Igor, which was his last project to be exclusively self-produced.
