Britney Spears’ father is officially filing to end the conservatorship

The announcement comes two months after Britney’s moving testimony to court

After effectively controlling his daughter’s life for the past 13 years, Britney Spears’ father has filed an unexpected request to terminate the controversial conservatorship at the heart of the #FreeBritney movement.

Jamie Spears, who is the conservator of his daughter’s estate, said “recent events” have called into question whether Britney still needs a court to oversee her personal affairs and finances.

“Ms Spears has told this court that she wants control of her life back without the safety rails of a conservatorship,” states the filing at a court in Los Angeles. “She wants to be able to make decisions regarding her own medical care, deciding when, where and how often to get therapy. She wants to control the money she has made from her career and spend it without supervision or oversight.”

“She wants to be able to get married and have a baby, if she so chooses. In short, she wants to live her life as she chooses without the constraints of a conservator or court proceeding.”

The announcement comes two months after Spears delivered a testimony to court, calling for the conservatorship to be terminated immediately. She has previously described the conservatorship as “abusive”.

Lawyers for Jamie Spears said: “As Mr Spears has said again and again, all he wants is what is best for his daughter. If Ms Spears wants to terminate the conservatorship and believes that she can handle her own life, Mr Spears believes that she should get that chance.”

Spears’ father, Jamie Spears, first became her conservator in 2008, following her five-day admission to a psychiatric hospital. Since then, he’s maintained control over her estate and finances, career, and other aspects of her life.

Since the #FreeBritney movement gained worldwide traction last year, a number of celebrities have come out in support of Britney, including Christina Aguilera, Courtney Love, Miley Cyrus, Paris Hilton, and more. Even Britney’s ex-boyfriend Justin Timerlake made a statement about the singer’s situation, writing on Twitter: “Regardless of our past, good and bad, and no matter how long ago it was… what’s happening to her is just not right. No one should EVER be held against their will… or ever have to ask permission to access everything they’ve worked so hard for.”
