Your dad’s favourite band is now TikTok’s latest hit. Fleetwood Mac’s 1977 chart-topper “Dreams” has tripled in sales and doubled its streams this week after a TikTok video featuring the song went viral.
Presumably it was the track’s melancholic-absurd vibe that inspired the video’s 17 million views (and counting). The clip, posted by user @420doggface208’s (LOL?), features a guy in a grey hoodie swigging Ocean Spray out of the bottle while riding his skateboard, naturally.
In the three days following the video’s posting on September 25, “Dreams” has racked up 2.9 million on-demand US streams and 3,000 digital download sales, which is an increase of 88.7 per cent and 374 per cent, respectively. Fleetwood Mac later reposted the video on their Twitter, saying: “We love this!”
Spotify also reported that streams were up 127 per cent on its platform with a 242 per cent increase in first-time listeners of the song. Apple reported a spike of 221 per cent in streams, and also reported a 1,137 per cent increase in Shazams for the song, indicating that the song was finding new listeners.
“Dreams” has become a classic rock staple on TikTok in recent years. In 2018, the track went viral following a dance video. With this latest spike in listens, there’s no doubt we’ll be hearing it again very soon.
