One of the last times she stepped into the BBC Live Lounge, Miley Cyrus performed an intimate, haunting cover of Lana Del Rey’s “Summertime Sadness”. Now, fresh from a stunning performance at the VMAs avec her glittering wrecking ball, Cyrus is back in the Live Lounge to cover Billie Eilish.
Whereas Eilish’s original is reflective and beautifully sparse, Cyrus reimagines “my future” as a jazzy rock ballad in a cabaret-like setting, with raspy vocals and some Cyrus attitude, full band in tow.
Eilish wrote “my future” while in quarantine with her collaborator and brother Finneas. Speaking of the process previously, the musician said: “When we wrote this song, it was exactly where my head was at – hopeful, excited, and a crazy amount of self-reflection and self-growth.” Eilish performed the song herself at the Democratic National Convention last month.
The Miley we all know so well is still kicking about here though: “I’m in love, but not with anybody else/See you in a couple years,” she sings, then looking straight into the camera, she adds: “but probably not,” sticking her infamous tongue out.
The release of “my future” followed Eilish’s Grammy-winning 2019 debut album WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? and this year’s follow-up singles, “everything i wanted” and “No Time to Die”, the official song of the next James Bond film.
Cyrus also performed “Slide Away” and “Midnight Sky” in the Live Lounge, the latter of which appears on her forthcoming album She is Miley Cyrus.
