After postponing this year’s 50th anniversary celebrations due to the coronavirus pandemic, Glastonbury Festival organiser and founder Michael Eavis has revealed that he’s uncertain whether next year’s festival will go ahead.
Speaking to ITV News, he said: “I’m still hoping it’s going to be running next year, and I’m going to be moving heaven and earth to make sure that we do. But that doesn’t mean it will necessarily happen. That is just wishful thinking really.”
He added: “The only certainty I think is the year after, 2022. We might have to wait for two years maybe. But I am still hoping and we are fighting and working at it all the time to make sure it happens next year.”
When asked if he is worried about the future of the festival, Eavis said he’s “confident the festival will survive”, adding: “The only certainty I think is the year after, 2022. You can’t kill it off just like that. It will come back, probably stronger actually.”
This year’s festival was set to mark its 50th anniversary, and was to be headlined by Kendrick Lamar, Paul McCartney, and Taylor Swift, with Diana Ross playing the Sunday Legends teatime slot.
