Lana Del Rey shares message about how Mother’s Day can be ‘challenging’

The singer acknowledged that the celebration ‘isn’t always the peaceful day some people hope it is’

Yesterday was Mother’s Day in the US, and Lana Del Rey took the opportunity to share her thoughts on the occasion. In a statement posted to social media, the singer acknowledged that it “isn’t always the peaceful day some people hope it is”.

Earlier in the day, Del Rey posted a tweet offering thanks to “my best friends who let me mother them and in turn mother me. Thank you Lord for reminding me that we get to choose our family today and that we get to walk with our chosen sisters and take turns nurturing each other”.

Later, she shared a longer message saying that Mother’s Day was “challenging for a multitude of reasons”, notably "family of origin traumas, disappointments of not being a mother" and "rifts with blood mothers”.

“So on this day as I always do every Mother’s Day, I want to send my love out to all my sisters in the world who aren’t quite where they thought they would be this Mother’s Day, and to all of my sisters who are blissfully happy as well.”

“It’s a beautiful thing to be a woman,” she said, adding, “I feel like a mother inside and out in the way that I’m able to enjoy Mother Nature in all of its glory and in the capacity I have to hold all of my women friends – known to me and unknown – in my heart space, in my womb space, and in my arms and thoughts.”

“I am the way I am because of the women along the way who have taught me everything I needed to know and loved me unconditionally," she said. “I’m also the way I am because of the women I have encountered in his life who have put conditions on their love and are steely in their nature.”

She concluded her message by writing, “I'm grateful to both and I am wise now too”, and celebrated “playful” women like her who have “a fire in their hearts that warms everyone they know and can never be extinguished”.

On Instagram, Lana Del Rey posted photos with her sister and captioned there were a “million reasons why I am grateful”.
