Watch Animal Crossing remakes of Lady Gaga and Britney Spears music videos

You thought you’d seen it all

Though you probably wouldn’t have believed it a couple of months ago, Animal Crossing has quickly become a creative outlet in these weird, uncertain times. From high fashion bootleg fits à la Raf Simons and Rick Owens to renditions of iconic artworks like Marina Abramović’s “The Artist Is Present”, we thought we’d seen it all – until now.

Users on the popular simulation game have taken to recreating iconic music videos by the likes of Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, Britney Spears, and Mariah Carey. It all started earlier this month when a Reddit user kazoo-E uploaded an Animal Crossing version of Carey’s “We Belong Together”, created using an in-game tool called Harv’s Island.

This was followed by a scene-by-scene remake of Grande’s “Thank u, next”, which features virtual Ariana in a red cheerleading costume as she dances it out against the rival team, kitted out in green, as per the original video. There’s also a freakishly accurate version of “Bad Romance”, complete with Gaga’s wedding dress, outfit reveal, and beat-by-beat production design.

Another player, Tracy Kennedy, has recreated  Spears’ “Toxic”, albeit using fold-out chairs to emulate the airplane seating and an exercise bike for the motorcycle. But the outfits are pretty spot on.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons has already shattered sales records, so far selling five million copies worldwide, as people look for a way to escape to a virtual island in the midst of the pandemic. Read our feature on its blissfully brilliant soundtrack here.
