A Whitney Houston biopic, I Wanna Dance With Somebody, is in the works

The film is being produced with approval from the Houston Estate

Whitney Houston has already been the subject of documentaries like Nick Broomfield’s Whitney: Can I Be Me and Kevin McDonald’s Whitney, released in 2017 and 2018 respectively. Now, the late singer’s story is being turned into a biopic.

Titled I Wanna Dance With Somebody, the film will be directed by Stella Maghie, produced by Clive Davis, and created in partnership with the Whitney Houston Estate, Pitchfork reports. The film was developed after Davis approached Bohemian Rhapsody screenwriter and producer Anthony McCarten with the idea.

“From all my personal and professional experience with Whitney from her late teenage years to her tragic premature death, I know the full Whitney Houston story has not yet been told,” Davis said in a statement.

“I am so glad that Anthony McCarten has committed to a no holds barred, musically rich screenplay that finally reveals the whole Whitney whose vocal genius deeply affected the world while she fiercely battled the demons that were to be her undoing.”
