The collaboration comes as the singer is still embroiled in a plagiarism controversy
Will we ever tire of Lizzo’s “Good As Hell”? Despite its original release dating back to 2016 on her Coconut Oil EP, the track has since graced our screens on Ru Paul’s Drag Race – the lip sync battle where we bid farewell to our beloved Monet X Change – and now pop’s biggest star, Ariana Grande wants in on it.
Lizzo shared a sample of the track on her Instagram last night, writing: “I GOT A BOTTLE OF TEQUILA AND A REMIX FOR YOU. GOOD AS HELL FEAT. @arianagrande NOW STREAMING BITCH.” Grande also shared the song, with the caption: “the most fun. thank you @lizzobeeating for having me on this remix !! i love you, your energy and this record so so much.”
Fans have been anticipating the remix since Lizzo shared an IG video of her sipping from a grande-sized Starbucks cup – teasing fans that they “will know what I’m talking about” if they can guess the drink’s size.
The release comes as Lizzo is accused of plagiarism over her song “Truth Hurts”. Songwriting brothers Justin and Jeramiah Raisen claimed in an Instagram post that they participated in a writing session with Lizzo, Jesse Saint John, and Yves Rothman in April 2017, during which everyone involved wrote the song “Healthy” which contains the famous lyric, “Just took a DNA test, turns out I’m 100 per cent that bitch.” This line, as we know, ended up in Lizzo’s hit song “Truth Hurts”, and now the brothers claim they were never credited for their work.
The singer defended herself on Twitter, saying: “The men who claim a piece of ‘Truth Hurts’ did not help me write any part of the song. They had nothing to do with the line or how I chose to sing it.”
Announcing the news that she would be suing the brothers, Lizzo’s attorney, Cynthia Arato, said in a statement: “Although it is all too commonplace for successful artists to be subjected to these type of opportunistic claims, it is nevertheless disappointing that Lizzo had to take this step to put an end to the Raisens’ false claims and their campaign of harassment.”
Despite this controversy, Lizzo has officially credited singer Maria Lioness – who was the first to accuse the singer of plagiarism – on the track for writing the 2017 tweet which inspired the meme that Lizzo drew inspiration from.
